Unpopular Transformers: Prime opinion, coming right up.
If we see more of Knock Out in the next season, I want to get more of what he was like in his first two episodes. Maybe it’s just because they focused on him specifically, but I thought his characterization was a lot better and way more balanced. The gay vibe was obviously meant to come across, and I enjoyed that. The fact that he actually wolf-whistled at Optimus Prime is amazing. But he wasn’t just “that one gay minion.” He was also dangerous and exceptionally arrogant. I think his “buff this” conversation with Starscream in “Speed Metal” captures his cockiness perfectly. Starscream was being surprisingly reasonable, and Knock Out was just so unnecessarily smug. It was great.
I get that it’s expensive to include a lot of characters, so there are only a few recurring Decepticons with speaking roles. But I feel like Knock Out has just become the character that they’re giving lines to by process of elimination, because someone has to say them. Soundwave doesn’t speak (yet?), Breakdown doesn’t try to cause drama, and Starscream is off searching for Thundercracker and Skywarp (or something).
I guess I just want to see him be a little dangerous again instead of “sassy” or throwing corny one-liners around. I know everyone disagrees, but I thought the way he reacted to Bulkhead painting him in “T.M.I.” was pretty uncharacteristic. He was stunned, and he did try to decapitate Bulkhead…but that was exactly what Megatron ordered him to do. I thought the way he snarled “Big mistake” and ran a driver off a cliff for scratching his paint was way better for his character, but that’s probably just me.
Essay over. Positive note: I do like the idea of him giving Orion Pax a tattoo.

I simply love his actions in ep. 10!! Like using every weapon he’s got - whistling and then knocking out Prime!
