I love how this whole subplot was really the inverted traditional husband-wife scenario; not because Sam wasn’t earning the big bucks, but because it was him feeling useless/inadequate, while Carly just wanted him to be happy being with her. It rings to me of relationships where the man goes out into the world, earns the dough, and expects his stay-at-home wife/mom to be happy with her lot. In fact, a lot of what Sam does/says in this movie reminds me of the books I’ve read of women in the fifties/sixties, even seventies, who would look around at their lives and wonder “What happened? What am I doing here?” Of course, forced social roles/giant robot wars = not the same, but still… … I dunno, maybe I think too much…
