THIS ^^^^^^
I guess when some people think “anime style” they think generic shoujo or something because that’s what all the weebs draw but in reality anime is just as varied as drawings or cartoons or animation from any other country
saying all anime looks the same is like saying looney tunes looks the same as toy story
anime is not a genre jeezus
I’m going to reblog to say “Hell yeah” but on the other side, I’m also going to add my own two cents. For the purposes of this, “anime” refers strictly to Japanese influences, and “western” is mostly US.
“Anime style,” I think, has become a catch-all term for a way of drawing that tends to fall under “One of these things is not like the others.” It’s stylized, but in a different direction than western-related art. Yes there are a few shared traits (though obviously not ALL have ALL of these): larger eyes, missing pupils and enlarged irises, elongated limbs, simplified facial structures. And yes, anime itself has a VERY varied look, as an above poster proved quite well. But you have to remember, at least in my experience and my area it’s still somewhat of a niche market. Anime doesn’t have the same sort of spread as, say, western creations such as Looney Tunes, for obvious reasons (we made them over here, people don’t have the money to buy or watch imports, etc). People tend to condense what they don’t understand or don’t have the experience to know further (or the wherewithal to learn more about the subject, which is a bigger and more general problem I’m not getting in to). Anime, as a genre of art, falls subject to this just as much as others. You don’t think other secrets like this could have been made, just substituting “Disney style” for example?
Me, I draw anime style. I will readily admit that, and that’s how I explain it to other people. It’s a term of convenience in the end, since 8 out of 10 people I know that I’d try to explain nuances to just wouldn’t get it. If people ask, then I will go into particulars of which anime(’s) style I learned from— which is Pokemon, in this case. In the end really, that’s the rub, isn’t it? Not what style, but which anime. People as a whole would likely not get it though, or not want to get it, so it continues to wind up being a broadly generalized term for a way of drawing that shares a few select traits but is more varied than people might give it.
I’m not entirely sure where my point disappeared to, so have this one instead: People can call it whatever the hell they want. And regarding the secret in general, I may be a bit biased but it is a style, and something of a genre. It can be copied from anime or grown off it and moved into its own way. Not everyone wants to, or can, draw realistically, or in the style of other ways of drawing. Appreciate the drawing for what it is, not judging it purely for the style it was drawn in.
Still can’t find that point. Oh well.
