So I love the fact that Optimus is so socially awkward that he has virtually no sense of humor. The LOLCat scene was one of the funniest moments in the series, in my opinion.
But I’ve noticed that Optimus does — very rarely — seem to at least understand what humor is. And it’s only around Ratchet.
Like in “Darkness Rising,” when Ratchet says that the humans “will go…squish” if they get underfoot. Optimus’ response is to put his hands on his hips and say, “Then for the time being, Ratchet…we must watch where we step.” It’s not that he isn’t concerned about the kids’ welfare, but the way he says it is just so excessively wise, like he’s playing off Ratchet’s sassy tone deliberately.
And later, when Ratchet says, “Optimus, if you leave me stranded on a planet teeming with humans, I will never forgive you.” Optimus simply replies, “Until we meet again, old friend,” and smiles a little bit. He even understands that Ratchet’s obsessive micromanaging in “Masters and Students” is amusing.
Basically, I don’t think Optimus is incapable of understanding humor. He just needs to know someone for a few million years to understand their specific type.
