[META] Size and Spark: Headcanon Regarding Model Types in Transformers: Prime
Remember when I posted the other day about writing meta-essays instead of doing anything productive like working on fanfic?
Well, the meta’s done. There are lots and lots of words by me, and they are illustrated with WONDERFUL drawings by Obfuscobble, and you should totally go check it out if you’re interested in that worldbuilding thing!

Ever since I wrote that meta-essay on gender and female-ness in Transformers, the concept of model-types has been preying on my mind. If femme is only one model type out of thirteen, what are the other twelve? What sociocultural significance, if any, do they have? Physiologically speaking, what even is a model-type?
Y’all best read this awesome post on WORLDBUILDING. I know I spent two days nonstop working this over with Nella and doing the ibby bibby illustrations. I wanted to give a contributor’s perspective on this.
First off about the ibby bibbies : as y’all know I am perfectly capable of drawing show-accurate robots. However, I made the decision to do these ibby bibby style because ibby bibby style focuses more on body shape and proportion, allowing the viewer to look more at the silhouette and mass of a character than the details for an altmode. In Nella’s classification, which I share, Earth altmode is unimportant. However, it’s also important to keep in mind that these classes are, like any body, subject to individual differences : Nella and I agree that Knockout is a Volante, but a rather buff one, and Soundwave is a Peregrine, but he doesn’t look like a seeker. What’s important is the general mass-class and the engine power of the Cybertronian.
Now, I hope I can be helpful to anyone trying to adapt to these new terms by classifying the characters in Transformers Prime as well as G1/Animated characters to help the reader get a better feel for what these classes entail.
- Femme: Arcee, Blurr, Those freaking twins
- Volante: Bumblebee, Vehicons, Knockout (on the buff side of Volantes)
- Carozzi: Ratchet, Swindle, Wheeljack (high performance for a Carozzi)
- Troqus: Optimus, Motormaster, Ironhide
- Panzere: Bulkhead, Breakdown, Megatron (WFC)
- Kriodox: Dinobots, Strika, (Kriodox yet to appear in Prime)
- Peregrine: Soundwave, Eradicons, Starscream (seeker class)
- Aquilus: Skyquake, Megatron, Jetfire (WFC, do not want, see below)
- Tyton: Skyfire (G1 insert VERY VERY WANT) (Tytons yet to appear)
- Supreme: Trypticon (WFC), Omega Supreme
- Atrezzi: Laserbeak, Rumble, Scorponok, Ravage (often called deployers)
- Triplechanger: Airachnid, Astrotrain, Sky Lynx
- Cambire: Makeshift, Mirage, Jazz
Reblogging for the breakdown of who would be what in this system! And also to reiterate that seriously this probably wouldn’t have happened— or would have been a much less interesting thing— without Scobble’s help.
