“Judge Tonya Parker, an openly gay Dallas County judge, has politely but firmly refused to marry straight couples in her Texas courtroom until the state allows same-sex couples to wed as well.
‘It’s kind of oxymoronic for me to perform ceremonies that can’t be performed for me,’ she said earlier this week. ‘So I’m not going to do it.’ Parker, Texas’ first openly gay African-American elected official, has unsurprisingly attracted criticism, as well as a number of supporters. ‘Parker is not violating her ‘oath of office’ or refusing to uphold Texas law,’ Dallas Morning News columnist Jacquielynn Flyod wrote. ‘She’s not abandoning her duty—she’s making a point.”
Wow, good for you, Judge Lady Parker! I am pleasantly surprised that this is coming out of Texas.
