avatar-confessions:

“I think it’s unrealistic how Korra was already advanced in her bending as a toddler. It makes Aang look really bad.”

What about Roku? Dude took like 10 years to learn the elements.

And for the record, Korra is 17 on the show and not yet a fully realized Avatar, and cannot even do anything with air. Aang was 12 and already fully realized by the end of the show. They’re both prodigies when compared to previous Avatars but in different ways. So stop with the Mary Sue talk OK?

but aang couldn’t even spit a bit of a flame out. Neither avatar could do anything as toddlers, Korra was already fucking shit up by then. its stupid and ruins her character. Maybe not THAT intense, but she definitely should have struggled more.

Actually in The Deserter, Aang had no trouble making giant flames but after he burned Katara, it was more a mental and emotional block that prevented him from generating fire later on. The only element Aang honestly had a problem with was earth, but I assume that will be similar to Korra’s problem with air.

I honestly would like to know if people saying Korra bending three elements at such a young age (pretty basic bending at that) would say this about guys who are also prodigies (e.g. Ed and Al from FMA).

Also, it’s likely that Korra hasn’t mastered waterbending, earthbending, and/or firebending at the beginning of the series. And there’s also the fact she isn’t spiritual to begin with, which is a pretty big fucking deal when you’re the Avatar.

All the above. It’s a CHARACTER TRAIT that she is really gifted at the physical side but not the spiritual side. If having your character be unusually good at something is a problem then that’s 99% of protagonists in literature gone, dang!

Is Korra significantly more advanced at a young age than most people are? Yep. Is she moreso than Aang? Possibly. Is this some sort of mistake? Nnnoooo, it’s, as above, a character trait. Making a character who is gifted at something is a perfectly reasonable narrative decision as long as you can back it up; some people are good at shit from a ridiculously early age, it happens. Also, Aang had proficiency in all four elements by age TWELVE. He learned three IN LESS THAN A YEAR. Korra is seventeen and still can’t airbend at all in the series. In some ways, she’s arguably less accomplished, especially since she’s had longer to practice, having known since she was a kid.

She can push a rock around, make a fireball and move water. Relax, fandom. Seriously.
