As of the newest trailer, it looks like Amon might be a spiritbender. This is an incredibly ancient art, so old that only a lionturtle even remembered it. Along with his rediscovery and expansion of the art of chiblocking, this seems to indicate that Amon is a deeply spiritual person, intent on bringing back the days of old and the way of life that existed before the Avatar and bending. What are the things Korra struggles with most?
