You know what I love? That regardless of the Joker/EDI stuff, EDI’s character arc and her growing sense of identity isn’t really about romance.
There’s a trend of humanising robots through their ability to fall in love in fiction that I have a profound irritation for- not only is it often used to define female characters (like EDI) by love in an obnoxious way, it’s also usually really heteronormative in a myriad of ways and by contrast, tends to dehumanise anyone who is aromantic. Oh, and on top of that? Lazy writing, to be honest.
But this line makes it very clear that EDI isn’t defined by those things. She’s defined by being a part of a crew trying to save the galaxy, and by the fact that she’s come to care for and protect them to the point she’d lay down her life. EDI defines herself as someone who has undergone a specific experience as a part of Shepard’s crew. I really, really love that.
