Norman’s father: Norman! Look at me when I speak to you, boy! When I was your age I was already out making a living! I’ve always known how to earn my keep! But you! Ever since you were born I—
Norman’s mother: Amberson, no! Don’t take out your anger on Norman! We don’t care about the money—
Norman’s father: How dare you bring that up! I’m still a man — money or no! It’s not my fault the business failed! I was robbed — cheated! Son! Listen to me! I haven’t finished speaking to you! Why isn’t that boy answering?
Norman’s mother: Amberson! Leave him alone — we’ll discuss it when you’re sober!
[ The next morning ]
Norman’s father: I swear it won’t happen again… but they stole my invention — we’re broke! I’m not a man — I’m a failure…
Norman’s mother: No you’re not, Amberson. Everything will be all right…
I’m, uh, rather obsessed with this page and the two following and can (and have) analyze them to death. While I will do in a page or two. Anyway, here we see Norman Osborn’s parents Amberson Osborn and ??? Osborn. Peter has been propelled into this memory so he is currently in Norman’s role, a small child towered over by an imposing abusive presence. He’s feeling what Norman was feeling — although, realistically, how did Harry know about this? Oh well, who cares about logic and physics in superhero comics anyway.
Also, say what you will about Sal Buscema — I know many people aren’t fond of his art style, but I love him as a Spider-Man artist. I love him as an Osborn artist. He is astounding with expressions — just look at Peter here. Look at the subtle difference between each look of distress in this page.
Other things to take note of: Peter is in costume but maskless, Norman’s mother is blonde.
The Spectacular Spider-Man Annual #14. Story by J.M DeMatteis and Tom Lyle, pencils by Sal Buscema.
