Do you ever think about how Tony came so close to finding closure in Civil War, only to have the rug snatched from under his feet?
I mean, up until his opening scene in CW, we only heard about Howard and Maria in passing. We saw that one clipping in The Winter Soldier about Howard dying in a car crash, and if you own the Phase One Collectors’ edition DVD set, then there’s an article prop about their car accident and death.
Then, we suddenly see Tony trying to relive a clearly painful memory: Whatever we saw inside the BARF simulation was what Tony wished had happened. Meaning, the real encounter was a lot nastier and maybe Tony and Howard yelled at one another before they left. Tony lived for 20 years with that guilt, of not giving his parents a proper goodbye. And finally, $600 million later, he finally found a technology that would help alleviate some of that guilt and regret.
Only for everything to come down like a deck of cards when he saw that grainy video of his parents being killed. Sure, what Tony saw may not have been as vivid as Bucky remembering the deaths, but he still saw the Soldier bash Howard’s skull and choking Maria.
Imagine, 20 years after you finally make peace with how you left things with your dead parents, you realize that night they didn’t die in a car crash. They were murdered.
I’ve been thinking a lot about this and just how well RDJ understands Tony’s character. And Chris Evans with Steve’s character. It’s all the little nuances in the third act of Civil War that made the film so good.
